Felt Roofs Develop Common Problems Over Time
Felt roofs face constant pressure from British weather conditions and natural ageing processes. Around 70 percent of felt roof leaks form at joints, seams, or upstands rather than in the middle of the roof surface, which means vulnerable connection points need regular attention. UV exposure is responsible for up to 40 percent of the wear seen on older felt roofs, and bitumen felt roofs can become brittle over time, increasing the risk of cracking during extreme temperature changes.
Common felt roof issues include cracking, splitting, blistering, ponding water, and leaks. These problems often start small but quickly worsen when left untreated. Traditional felt roofs typically last between 10 and 15 years, but high-quality repairs and modern overlay systems can add another 5 to 10 years of service life.
